Abstract:
This dissertation considers the work of the nineteenth-century French Sybmolist poet Paul Verlaine and examines the association between texts and the music of composers who chose to set them. The impressionist medium, represented in the settings of Debussy and Poldowski, emerges as the most efficacious in the treatment of Verlaine's poetry.
