Eoin Seamus Hegarty, A biographical sketch of Gerard Victory with a catalogue of works
Volumes, pp.: 2 (Vol.1 43pp., Vol. 2 253pp.)
Supervisor(s): Séamus de Barra and Dr Geoffrey Spratt
General specialism: Musicology
Key terms, persons: Gerard Victory
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to present an account of the life of Gerard Victory, with a detailed catalogue of his musical compositions. The information pertaining to his life was largely constructed from interviews given by Victory on various aspects of his life and work, from pervious biographical accounts, and from various writings and opinion pieces by Victory himself, such as programme-notes, articles, or his book, Music and Society. Also consulted in this way were many programme-notes on Victory’s compositions by various writers and critics who had the opportunity of experiencing first hand many performances of his music. With a few exceptions, which are noted in the bibliography of the biographical sketch, this information was located in MSS in the Victory archives in Trinity College, Dublin. In this sketch of Victory’s life, a rounded picture of the composer and the nature of his compositional career emerges. The study thus presents the most detailed survey so far attempted of the life and works of Gerard Victory.
The annotated catalogue of works is a full listing of all Victory’s compositions. It includes 441 entries. This is over twice the number of the Contemporary Music Centre’s database catalogue, which was previously the most comprehensive list of Victory’s works available. There is a very detailed introduction to the catalogue which outlines fully the research method employed.
There are two appendices to the catalogue: (a) a catalogue of works in alphabetical order, and (b) a catalogue of works listed according to genre. These lists were compiled in order to facilitate the use of the catalogue.
