Abstract:
This thesis has as its primary aim the creation of the first ever critical edition of the string quartets of Ireland’s most senior living composer, John Kinsella. It provides a detailed record and description of the known source material and information concerning first performances and any concomitant adaptation. There is also an attempt to place the quartets in the context of the composer’s career and life. The collection begins with Kinsella’s second string quartet as the first having been excluded from consideration at the request of the composer.
The editorial procedure adopted and a record of editorial intervention are provided in an accompanying critical apparatus. Individual issues that arise are recorded in a specifically detailed critical report. The final edition is intended to provide practical performance material in the form of a scholarly edition suitable for standalone publication presented in both printed and electronic formats using Sibelius notation software.
Research for this thesis included extensive consultation and interaction with the composer, members of the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet and previous RTÉ ensembles. Once all of the suitable source material was located and evaluated – primarily in the RTÉ performing groups’ library, the composer’s personal collection and the working library of the Vanbrugh Quartet – a editorial procedure was developed that served the needs of, and was satisfactory to, the composer and the principle performers of his work. Print layout has been carefully considered in an attempt to be as faithful as possible to the original material, and to provide clear performance parts that conform to modern notational and design norms.
