Noel Barrett, Brian Boydell (1917-2000): The String Quartets, A Critical Edition and Study
Volumes, pp.: 2 (Vol. 1 181pp., Vol. 2 Manuscript sources - unpaginated)
Supervisor(s): Keith Pascoe
General specialism: Musicology
Abstract:
This thesis has as its primary aim the creation of a critical edition of the string quartets of Brian Boydell. To my knowledge this is the first critical edition of the quartets. It also provides a detailed record and description of the known source material and information concerning first performance, dedications and ephemera.
The editorial procedure adopted, and a record of any editorial changes made to the scores during transcription is provided in an accompanying critical apparatus, and individual issues that arise are recorded in a specifically detailed critical report. The final edition is intended to provide a scholarly edition suitable for standalone publication in both paper and electronic media presented using Sibelius software.
Some background information concerning the composer is provided in the opening chapters. Chapter one delves into Boydell's contribution to Music in Ireland and the following chapter touches on the characteristic traits that exemplify his writing style.
The author hopes that this edition will provide a practical means of access to scholars, performers and students of Boydell's string quartets leading to further performances and recordings of these fine works.
