Abstract:
This submission for the degree of Master of Arts consists of the Piano Quintet of 1938, the Mass of 1972 and the Mass for Peace of 1976 of Aloys Fleischmann, an Irish composer of German extraction. The edition is presented in two volumes, the first consisting of preliminary text and an appendix. The second volume contains the musical text of the works edited. In Volume I, the Preface contains background information on this submission and a review of materials currently available for the study of the life of Aloys Fleischmann. Chapter 1 contains an outline of the composer’s life and career. Chapter 2 presents the historical background to the works in this edition. Chapter 3 contains a discussion of the musical styles and structures of the works cited. Chapter 4 describes the musical sources referred to in the creation of this edition. Chapter 5 outlines the editorial policies adopted in the editing of the music. Chapter 6 presents a critical report of discrepancies and items of note in the sources consulted. The Bibliography lists books, articles and manuscripts consulted in the preparation of this edition. Appendix A presents typeset variants of the music of the Piano Quintet that have arisen as the result of alterations to the music by the composers. Volume II contains the musical text of the Piano Quintet (1938), Mass (1972) and Mass for Peace (1976).
