Abstract:
The use of web-based technology is a widely accepted pedagogical tool at primary school level. However, the use of web technology in music education at primary level has not been previously researched in regard to the teaching and learning of Irish traditional music. This study explored the relevance of using YouTube for the teaching of Irish traditional music in an urban disadvantaged context known as DEIS primary school.
The aims of this action research project were threefold: a) to explore primary pupil’s engagement with Irish traditional music through the use of YouTube; b) to explore differentiated musical pathways for pupils from diverse backgrounds; c) to enhance primary pupils’ motivation towards the learning of Irish traditional music through musically meaningful experiences.
Empirical data were collected from seventeen students in fourth class (aged 9-11), in the form of questionnaires, reflective journals, observations and interviews. Photographic and video evidence were also gathered along with the co-creation of YouTube videos featuring the pupils. In addition, a ceramic clay mural was also created to show the meaning and relevance of Irish traditional music to the children as a result of the project.
Results indicate that web technology in the form of YouTube and music blogs complement music education practice for the teacher while also creating musically meaningful learning experiences for primary pupils. This led to an increased awareness of musical value, musical ability and the acknowledgment of diverse and indigenous cultural identities.
