Abstract:
The Contemporary Music Seminars of the Cork International Choral Festival have generated a significant platform for the development of choral composition in Ireland and have continued to provide a forum for the conductors, singers, composers, and academics that constitute the choral community centred on the Festival. During the fifty-year period covered by this research, 128 compositions from 105 composers were commissioned for the forty-four Seminars and the scores of these works were held in various repositories and locations. This research examines the context for the genesis of this corpus of material and comprises a systematic catalogue of the Seminar works. This thesis collates information derived from the scores, supplemented by detail acquired from other sources, including archival ephemera and electronic sources. The thesis presents an overview of the Seminar compositions and concludes with an outline of the current status of this corpus of works. The thesis is intended to facilitate further research on this material and aims to provide a significant resource for performers and academics.
