Abstract:
The 'Trois danses' (Joies, Deuils, Luttes), written between 1937 and 1939, represent the most significant single contribution to the solo organ repertory made by Jehan Alain (1911-1940). This thesis analyzes the dances with a view to isolating characteristics of their musical technique.

Four chapters make up the main part of the tehsis. Chapter one contains a brief biography and some general background information to the 'Trois danses'. Chapter two examines their form, while chpater three studies aspects of their texture, melody, harmony and rhythm. The thesis concludes with an evaluation in chapter four. Two appendices contain a bibliography and an abstract respectively.
