Abstract:
The purpose of this research study is to investigate the ways in which second level music teachers, in the Republic of Ireland, assess musical performances and the ways in which a teacher's background may influence this assessment. The research is mixed methods in design and incorporates questionnaires and follow-up interviews. This study surveyed teachers, by way of convenience and snowball sampling from the Republic of Ireland. Interview participants were purposively sampled. The data were compiled and analysed thematically. The main objectives of this study were to gain a greater insight into the assessment methods used by second level music teachers in Ireland in relation to performance and to explore the extent to which the musical backgrounds and prior experiences of music teachers influence assessment in performance. The main findings show that second level music teachers are assessing musical performances frequently, more than was shown previously in Ireland. Teachers are accommodating their students' needs beyond the constraints of the timetable and are aware of the connections between student self-esteem and musical performance. The data highlighted a need for greater consistency in initial teacher education programmes. Teachers were not always confident in their assessments. This research stresses the need for further developments in teacher training and CPD for music teachers in the assessment of musical performance. There is also a need for greater transparency with regard to state examination criteria in relation to a musical performance to help teachers provide the best service to their students.
