Summary:
This PhD is focused on the composer, writer, and social activist Dame Ethel Smyth (1858-1944). Smyth had a significant impact on the world of music during the first half of the twentieth century, most notably within operatic circles. However, her choral and solo vocal works remain largely under-explored. This thesis aims to situate these works within their historical context, considering how Smyth's religious beliefs and political leanings shared their creation. This approach entails a high level of interdisciplinary research and offers a broad hermeneutic reading of the musical works.
