Abstract:
This thesis seeks to define the meaning and origin of the term 'bel canto' during the period 1630-1775. It discusses the priciples and precepts as they were then referred to, drawing on Mancini's 'Practical Reflections on Figured Singing' (Vienna, 1774). The skills which may enable a vocalist authentically to perform the repertoire from the period 1630-1845 are indicated, while also providing guidelines relevant to teaching the discipline of singing today.
