Abstract:
This thesis considers the contribution of the last nineteenth-century Italian composer, pianist and teacher, Michele Esposito (1855-1929) to musical life in Dublin between the years 1882 and 1928.
Five chapters make up the principal part of the thesis. The first gives a brief biography, the second surveys Esposito's career as a performer and lists some programmes given in Dublin. Chapter three outlines his teaching qualities and chapter four gives a commentary and analysis of the piano music. The thesis concludes with an evaluation and two appendices, containing a bibliography and abstract respectively.
