The purpose of this research is to examine the contribution of Louis Stewart to the development of Jazz and specifically the Jazz guitar in Ireland, placing particular emphasis on his contribution to performance and composition. This is a practice based project involving a major performance dimension in the form of two public recitals and two lecture recitals. These will include works and arrangements by Louis Stewart and selected Irish contemporary Jazz guitarists, as well as international Jazz guitarists who have influenced the development of Stewart’s own style. In addition, a critical assessment will be made of Stewart’s discography, providing further insight into the performance and interpretation of his work. In conclusion, this study will examine Stewart’s role in the development and promotion of Jazz guitar in Ireland and assess his influence on contemporary guitar styles.
