This paper examines the phenomena of multi-instrumentalists in the Irish musical tradition. It attempts to identify various qualities of the Irish music tradition that encourage or foster multi-instrumentalism. It also addresses the challenges faced in developing skills on more than one instrument. I will draw on my own experience as a multi-instrumentalist in the Irish music tradition, and from fieldwork conducted with both amateur and professional multi-instrumentalists and performers and teachers.
