Vivienne McKeon, ‘One Faithful Harp Shall Praise Thee’: Social and Political Motives of the Drogheda Harp Society
Supervisor(s): Barra Boydell
General specialism: Musicology
Abstract:
The establishment of the Drogheda Harp Society marks an important period of musical activity in early 1840s Drogheda, and although it was to last only five years its significance was to have a far greater impact. It was established c.1839 by Fr. Thomas V. Burke, a local Dominican priest, and ostensibly the main function of this society was to provide a musical education and outlet for the working class children of the area. This dissertation examines the Harp Society’s close links with the Temperance movement on Drogheda as well as the prevailing nationalist aspirations as embodied in the social, political and moral ideology of Fr. Burke himself. I argue in this thesis that Fr. Burke’s motivations in forming the Harp Society were primarily socio-political in nature rather than musical.
