Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the goals of the 'National Children's Strategy: Our Children, Their Lives (2000)' through the implementation of an action research choral music-making project at primary level. Three of the interlinked dimensions of childhood development were explored: identity, peer interaction and adult interaction. In addition, children's motivation to engage wiht a negotiated curriculum was also investiaged.

A six-week project of choral music-making was established. Choral content was planned by both researcher and forty-eight primary school pupils and the sessions occurred three times per week. Three data collection methods were chosen to explore the national goals. These methods included: participant-observation, researcher's diary and focus group discussions.

The study found that choral music-making provided a platform for the development of children's identity, peer interaction and adult interaction. However, this study discovered that children experienced a lack of enjoyment from peer directed learning. In conclusion, the findings of this study indicate that choral music-making provides an extensive educational opportunity to enable the development of three interlinked dimensions of childhood development. Additionally, choral music-making provides an opportunity to develop children's motivation to engage with a negotiated curriculum.
