Abstract:
This dissertation aims to examine the extent to which Handel exploits the particular qualities of the female contralto voice in his operas. It will include a detailed analysis of the tessitura of a number of Handel’s contralto roles and a systematic investigation of the extent to which he adapted his compositions to suit each of his contralto performers. Further analysis will explore whether Handel adapted his compositional style or composed in a specific vocal range to convey particular emotions or affect.
